iOS 10 now installed on more than half of all devices

iOS 10 has already been installed on more than half of all iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches, according to Apple’s latest adoption figures. The release was made available to the public less than a month ago, and it’s already at 54 percent.

iOS 10 adoption is slightly slower than that of iOS 9 — which had been installed on 57 percent of devices by this time last year — but it’s still being picked up at an impressive rate, especially when you compare the figures to Google’s latest Android release.

It’s also worth noting that iOS 10 is compatible with fewer devices, what with support for older products like the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2 bring dropped this year. Apple also seems to have been a little less aggressive about reminding users to upgrade this time around.

The speedy adoption of new iOS upgrades is made possible by the fact that Apple provides its software directly to customers. Carriers and other partners don’t have any input in iOS, so each upgrade reaches all users worldwide at the same time.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Android, which is iOS’ biggest competitor. Thanks to so many hardware makers and input from carriers, Google’s latest upgrades are notoriously slow at making their way to users — unless you have a Nexus or Pixel device.

For instance, Android 7.0 Nougat, which made its public debut back in August, is yet to appear in Google’s official Android adoption chart. Marshmallow, which was release last fall, has been installed on just 18.7 percent of devices so far.

There’s no reason why you wouldn’t want to upgrade to iOS 10 if it’s available for your device. The upgrade brings big improvements and new features, including a revamped lock screen, redesigned Apple News and Music apps, and a terrific new Messages experience.
