iOS 9.3 delivers AT&T international Wi-Fi calling

iOS 9.3, which rolled out just two days ago, has a nice little treat packaged for AT&T iPhone users. The update delivers support for international Wi-Fi calling on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus (and presumably the iPhone SE) , and customers should have received a notification alerting them of the change last night.

As you’ll see in the screenshot below, I received the text message that reads:

“With the latest software update for your phone you can use Wi-Fi calling when traveling outside the U.S. This means you can call back to the U.S. or receive incoming calls, with no airtime charges. When you call international numbers, your rates will be the same as those in your smartphone plan or your international package. For details visit att.com/wificalling.”

You’ll need to turn on Wi-Fi calling first, if you haven’t already, by visiting Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi calling and turning the option to “On.”

AT&T has offered regular Wi-Fi calling for a little while now; it lets you place calls over a Wi-Fi network if your signal is poor. International support will be useful for folks who don’t want to pay exorbitant roaming fees abroad, or who don’t want to deal with trying to buy a separate SIM card. Just make sure you have a decent Wi-Fi network.
