Jaw-dropping Dragon Quest XI footage debuts open world and new characters

Square Enix kept its promised and delivered big for Dragon Quest XI this past weekend at Jump Festa 2016. The game got three amazing trailers at the show, each dedicated to certain areas of its complete package.

In the trailers, we see the beautiful open world that will be available in the PlayStation 4 and presumably Nintendo Switch versions of the game. The Nintendo 3DS version also looks great, and the above trailer shows off how the upper screen’s modern look and the touch screen’s retro look cooperate with one another.

This trailer is the game’s CG introduction, and it brings a little context to this gaming world and our main hero. It’s loaded with charming moments, new faces, potential companions, and of course, that unmistakable musical fanfare.

And a final trailer shows off a new character revealing himself to the hero. We don’t know who he is just yet. He introduces himself to the hero as Kamyu and asks for his trust. Could be a companion, but that haircut and those earrings are prime examples of a Toriyama villain or anti-hero. Be careful around this guy!

Still no Japanese voice acting for Dragon Quest

The most jarring thing about these trailers is actually what doesn’t make an appearance. Dragon Quest is stuck in the past when it comes to adhering to traditions, and this strict loyalty to an established formula while still making progress is one of the aspects that makes the series so endearing.

However, these character models are too complex and too lifelike to not have voices coming out of their mouths when they speak. The only comparison close enough is Dragon Quest VIII, and even those characters didn’t have voices originally. It took the North American localization team to make that decision.

And it made a world of difference, too!
