After the progression made from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within to the remastered version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Square Enix continues to set the standard for showing exactly what CG motion capture can do for a full-length fantasy movie.
And the latest, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, is just getting to the point where it’s become just too close. We say that every time there is a break in technology that allows such creations to be so lifelike, but just watch the trailer and look at these screen-caps from 4Gamer, and tell me these aren’t just sickeningly accurate.
But hey, don’t forget that the movie has a story. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV takes place before the events of the upcoming game, and it focuses on the war between the kingdom of Lucis and the empire of Niflheim. Lucis’ king, the father of the game’s protagonist, struggles to hold onto his power and turns to an elite group of soldiers called the “Kingsglaive,” lead by a CG -rendered Aaron Paul, to defend his palace.
Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV also stars Game of Thrones actors Sean Bean and Lena Headey in lead roles. Hopefully, this will be more than just rampant, gorgeous fan-service like Advent Children and actually provides an emotional foundation for the subsequent game. The film will see a wide release in Japan on July 9.
