I almost forgot that HAL Laboratory had a new Kirby game in development for the Nintendo 3DS. Since its initial reveal back in March, Nintendo has been tight lipped on the game, and even though it’s a bit more loose lipped now, it won’t matter. The latest trailer is for Japanese speaking audiences only.
Not that non-Japanese speakers are missing out on important information, though. Kirby games are about as simple as they come, and Kirby: Planet Robobot fills in all the checks required. Colorful worlds, deceptively simple platforming, and plenty of devastating powers to absorb from enemies. What this game does different from the rest though is that is tosses our favorite pink puffball into a radical suit of robot armor, and let’s him smash nightmares to pieces.
And of course, being that it is Kirby’s armor, it too can swallow enemies and customize their abilities for its own destructive purposes.
I’m getting a real Mega Man X feel from this. Of course, the simple character was cool from the start, but Capcom got the brilliant idea to let him ride in the Robot Ride Armor. And then wow, we never looked at classic Mega Man in the same way again.
I wasn’t too big on Kirby: Triple Deluxe, thinking that it was a bit too rudimentary for my taste, but I like what HAL is doing here. Kirby has been a lot of things over the years, but a badass is not one of them. This robot armor changes that.
Kirby: Planet Robobot launches for the Nintendo 3DS on May 2.
