Lotus on Monday confirmed that it would be partnering with Williams Advanced Engineering to share R&D resources in the interest of developing advanced propulsion technologies. While that is an extremely vague topic to collaborate on, Lotus says it brings expertise in lightweight structures and advanced materials to the table, while Williams has experience with battery technology from its four years as exclusive battery supplier for Formula E.
Phil Popham, CEO, Lotus Cars said, “Our new technology partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering is part of a strategy to expand our knowledge and capability in the rapidly changing automotive landscape. Applying advanced propulsion powertrains can provide numerous exciting solutions across multiple vehicle sectors. Our combined and complementary experiences make this a very compelling match of engineering talent, technical ability and pioneering British spirit.”
This partnership is said to be an effort to bring to market an ultra-advanced electric Hypercar under the Lotus nameplate, internally codenamed project Omega, according to Autocar. Further claims indicate that Omega will be a $2 million four-wheel-drive electric hypercar to compete with the likes of Aston Martin’s Valkyrie and Mercedes-AMG’s One.
Lotus has been incredibly ambitious a number of times in the past only for it to fizzle to nothing. Personally, I hope this project comes to fruition. So long as it continues the decades-long Lotus lightweight ethos, it should be an excellent addition to the hypercar lineup.
