Man Driving Through Tornado Proves New Zealanders Swear Just As Much As Their Aussie Cousins

When I think of New Zealand, I have two cultural frames of reference: it looks like Middle Earth, and Flight of the Conchords is from there. Yet neither hobbits nor folk rap stars swear that much, so I figured Kiwis were the PG version of Australians. I was wrong. That’s apparently not the case when they’re driving through a tornado.

Truck driver Rick Field can be forgiven, I think, for losing his cool while he drove through a tornado in Taranaki, New Zealand on Tuesday. In the video, Field at first seemed pretty pumped to be hurtling towards a severe weather event.

His language became more and more colorful as the wind and rain picked up and he realized that yes, indeed, he was driving through a fucking tornado! News Hub New Zealand notes that the truck Field was driving weighs 11 tons and it was tossed around like a diecast model by the intense wind. Luckily, Field lived to post this video.

So what should you do should you encounter a tornado while driving? According to the advice of the Red Cross, you should: “… pull over and park, keeping your seat belt on and engine running. Put your head down below the windows, covering your head with your hands and a blanket.”

Go out there and live your best life, even in a tornado!
