We got our first peek at Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay when BioWare showed it off at Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro event back in September. It looked good, but it was really short. At last night’s Game Awards, we got a longer look that showed off something other than walking around.
The nearly-five-minute trailer focuses on combat and exploration, with an emphasis on the latter. Combat in Mass Effect: Andromeda looks like an evolution of the combat we’re used to, but with some new abilities, like the main character’s jet pack, changing how we can navigate the field.
But if exploration is your jam, there’s plenty of that, too.
On the other side of the action coin is exploration. The six-wheeled Nomad looks like it’s going to be quite useful, and the scanning tool could be fun if BioWare uses it well. There’s apparently a focus on crafting in Mass Effect: Andromeda, and we even get a shot of the main character picking some space-flowers on a pleasant-looking alien planet. That particular slice looks a lot like what I remember from Dragon Age: Inquisition. While I enjoyed that game, picking flowers was not the best it had to offer, so I hope that doesn’t take up too much time.
Visually, just this short slice of gameplay suggests more aesthetic variety than the original Mass Effect series, though we’ll see if that’s really the case when it actually hits. It’s looking good, though, and that trailer above is in 4K, if you have the hardware to run it.
Mass Effect: Andromeda is set for release on PC, PlayStation 4/PS4 Pro, and Xbox One in Spring of 2017.
