Memorial Day Motorsports Recap And Roundup

Good morning! It’s Memorial Day, a holiday for everyone else at Jalopnik so I’m running the show. This past weekend was full of exciting endurance racing, disappointing (if unsurprising) Formula 1 results, and a 100th Indy 500 that truly deserved a special note in the history books. So, here’s your Memorial Day Motorsports roundup to catch up.

There’s no Morning Shift today, so instead we’ll review the weekend. Don’t worry, there will still be enough content today to save you from the family barbecue should the going get tough.

First up is the biggest race of the weekend, the Indianapolis 500, where a reserve Formula 1 driver coasted to win the 100th running of the race. Congratulations Alexander Rossi!

Oh, and there were some crashes.

And Jalopnik was there in force to bring the best Indy 500 breakdowns, walkthroughs, interviews, and LIVE! tours of the weekend.

There was also a Formula 1 race in Monaco, where it looked like Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo’s big Australian balls not only earned him pole, but almost a win. And yet somehow a Mercedes still ended up taking it.

And it was wet, so of course there were some crashes.

And last but definitely not least was the exciting battle for the win at the Nürburgring 24 Hour race between two Mercedes after some Bibically-crazy weather.

And with all of that there was still news, including the announcement that Formula 1 will mandate halo-style head protection for drivers in 2017 and, of course, the new BBC’s Top Gear premiere.

We’ll be liveblogging the new episode of Top Gear tonight, starting just before the 9PM ET air time on BBC America. Find out where you can watch it here.

Enjoy your day off with some racing, meat, and beer. It’s what -insert American holiday here- is all about.
