The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Edition 1 is a 612 horsepower collision machine, almost dead set on destroying your driver’s license and whatever building you eventually crash into/through. More importantly, it has fantastic tape stripes.
The E63 normally comes with 603 horsepower. This one is minutely, critically more powerful and obviously so, so, so much better. This car has 612 horsepower! That is so many horsepowers!

But, importantly, let me get back to the tape stripes.
I walked over to the Mercedes booth here at the LA Auto Show and asked if the company had put these stripes on the car simply because the ‘70s were awesome.
Sadly, Nick at Mercedes demurred and said that the stripes are meant only to evoke the five bars of the AMG logo itself. They are not meant to evoke the faded glory of Pontiac Can Ams or Toyota Tercel SR5s.

And rather than call them “Smokey And The Bandit Tribute Stripes,” Mercedes officially names them “Acceleration Lines.”
That’s fine, Mercedes. I see your tape stripes’ retro excellence in my heart of hearts.
