Microsoft will chat more about virtual reality during an event in December. Don’t be confused: Microsoft is tackling virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). HoloLens is its project for the latter, while Microsoft briefly discussed the former during its Surface event last week.
During that press conference, Microsoft confirmed that its partners, including HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS and Acer, will unveil VR headsets starting at $299 next year. Microsoft didn’t, however, discuss what the devices will be capable of. Presumably, given the price, they won’t be as advanced as other PC-powered alternatives such as the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive.
Microsoft VR plans coming in December
Polygon said that the VR headsets will offer a “high field of view” and that they’ll need to be attached to the computer with a cable. They’ll support six degrees of movement and inside-out tracking. But we don’t know much more, like what the software will be like inside the headset, or what sort of apps and experiences will be possible.
That may all come to light in December, according to Polygon, which said Microsoft will talk more about its VR plans during its WinHEC (Hardware Engineering Community) events.
