  • Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is eager to settle his controversial rivalry with middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in May.
  • Alvarez and Golovkin recently fought to a disputed draw in September, which has stoked the demand for an imminent rematch.
  • A number of venues have come forward in hope of hosting the event — including the 80,000 capacity AT&T Stadium, home of NFL side the Dallas Cowboys.

Middleweight slugger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could settle his controversial rivalry with WBC, WBA, IBF, and IBO world champion Gennady Golovkin at a major NFL stadium in May 2018.

It won’t be the first time Alvarez has challenged concussive puncher Golovkin. After all, the two prizefighters boxed to a disputed draw at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in September.

According to Compubox statistics, Golovkin landed more jabs and was clearly the more active fighter, but the ringside judges failed to separate the two. The draw has only stirred up demand for a rematch.

Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions (the organisation that looks after Alvarez), said the rematch will be on Cinco de Mayo, an annual Mexican celebration which lands on May 5 next year.

Speaking on “The 3 Knockdown Rule” with Mario Lopez, Gomez said: “We had been thinking about doing it sooner, maybe March, we had some other ideas, but now ‘Canelo’ came back and said, ‘Lets do it Cinco de Mayo.'”

Gomez said a number of venues are being considered. Though he added that “it’s hard to compete with Vegas” as “the amenities are unmatched,” the home of NFL team the Dallas Cowboys, the AT&T Stadium, is firmly in the mix.

“[Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones came back and wants to meet with us. Madison Square Garden [in New York City] wants to meet with us,” Gomez said. “They’ve told us, ‘Look, we’re serious, we really want the rematch, we want an opportunity to meet.’ We’re going to give them an opportunity to sit down and meet with them.”

Alvarez, 27, has fought predominantly in Las Vegas in the last five years. However, he has boxed thrice in Texas, including one bout at the AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
