With a few teasers under our belt, it was pretty evident that Mopar wasn’t going to be taking any prisoners this year. While GM showed off an 800KW electric crate motor kit as a “concept”, Mopar was bringing down the house with four-digits worth of supercharged Hemi crate motor power they’re calling the Hellephant. The name is an homage to the original 426 Hemi, as it was nicknamed that for its huge size, weight, and power. The new supercharged 426 produces an even 1000 horespower and 950 lb-ft of torque.
The company was careful to announce that the engine was for use in pre-1976 cars and off-road vehicles only, but I’m almost certain it’ll find use in any number of technically illegal cars in states/counties with no smog regulations.
Over the last few years, FCA, Dodge, and most specifically the performance arm Mopar, have been focused on the concepts of more and bigger. A couple of years ago, Mopar showed the first Hemi Crates at SEMA, and last year unveiled the Hellcrate. At this rate, they’ll be bringing 1500 horsepower crate engines based on the same engine architecture to SEMA 2022.

The kit, which includes a powertrain control module, power distribution center, engine wiring harness, chassis harness, accelerator pedal, ground jumper, oxygen sensors, charge air temperature sensors, fuel pump control module and cam bus interface device, will be available to the public in the first quarter of 2019. Pricing has not yet been announced, but the Hellcrate 707-horsepower version is priced at $19,530, so expect to pay a good chunk of change more than that.
