At least, it’s as good a time as any to sit down and see how the great world rally cars of the early 1990s drove on the rough forest roads of Rally GB. At least, it’s as good a time as any to hear them.
I sent this video to my coworker David Tracy yesterday, who posted it in his tribute to the Lancia Delta Integrale, but I feel we should take a bit more of a look at it.
These Group A cars were the top-rung WRC contenders in the wake of Group B’s abrupt cancellation following a string of fatal crashes.
But today, decades on, it’s hard to see them as anything but reasonably attainable vehicles. It’s not too hard to buy yourself a Subaru Legacy and make it as fast as what Colin McRae was driving at the time. We can buy Delta Integrales as easily as we like now, and a Group A-grade build wouldn’t be out of reach of many dedicated enthusiasts.

So it’s nice to see them driven up to and over the limit, a little reminder of what’s within reach of the imagination.
