Nvidia this week officially unveiled a new Shield TV, one of the market’s best set-top boxes on the market. The updated model was announced at an event in Las Vegas for CES 2017.
The biggest addition to the new Shield TV, which will retail for $199 when it’s available next month, is support for 4K HDR. With 4K becoming a common media in streaming, HDR is the next step in home entertainment. As part of the new feature, Nvidia announced it has added Amazon Video in 4K HDR, the first Android TV device to offer the feature.
Thankfully, existing Shield TV device will gain the same feature thanks to an update expected to roll out later this month.
Additionally, the Shield TV will also add support for Google Assistant, the search giant’s powerful new artificial intelligence. Like with Google Home, users will be able to mutter hands-free commands to Assistant through the Shield TV’s included remote. Shield TV users can also take advantage of an additional peripheral, called Nvidia Spot, that can be placed anywhere in the home.
Nvidia’s Shield TV has always been marketed as more than a simple Android TV device. In addition to having access to the Google Play Store, the Shield TV can also access Nvidia services, including GeForce Now, a subscription service that provides users with unlimited streaming of over 100 PC games.
The new Shield TV is available now for pre-order for $199 and is expected to ship later this month. The Nvidia Spot mic accessory will retail for $49.99.
