Oculus CEO Twitter account gets hacked, hilarity ensues

Those poor tech CEOs just can’t catch a break. First Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was hacked, then Google boss Sundar Pichai, and now Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe is feeling the burn as well. On Wednesday night his Twitter account was breached. The hacker posted several tweets and updated Iribe’s bio to read, “hey its @Lid… im not testing ya security im just havin a laugh.”

@Lid told TechCrunch over Twitter DM that he found Iribe’s password in the massive trove of Myspace passwords that leaked in May, putting over 427 million passwords up for sale online. It turns out Iribe uses the same password for Twitter. He used it for his email as well, but he had two-factor authentication enabled.

The hacker managed to get at least a few tweets off before Iribe reclaimed control over the account. Most notably, he tweeted a message announcing that @Lid would be taking over as CEO of Oculus, tagging himself in the post. He also mocked Iribe for using the same password for four years.

This doesn’t appear to be the same hacker group responsible for recently breaching Zuckerberg and Pichai’s accounts. In this case, it was the work of a single person who got lucky. Still, it’s a good reminder to keep your passwords updated and to use two-factor authentication whenever possible.
