Blizzard is singing high praises of its recent release, Overwatch, claiming that the game is now “one of the most successful global game launches of all time.” According the publisher, Overwatch gathered 7 million players in its first week of availability, and 119 million hours have been pumped into the game so far.
The 7 million figure stands for “unique global player count, which includes anyone who’s played the digital or retail version of the game, as well as those who have played the game in Internet game rooms.” So while it’s not yet at 7 million sales, at least the players are flowing and word is getting out there.
Blizzard claimed last month that the game’s beta test was a huge success and totaled 9.7 million players in total.
One last figure the company shared was that “players have swapped heroes 326 million times,” meaning that they are expanding beyond the comfort zone of a single character, and that players have “teamed up to deliver 11 million payloads to their destinations on the battlefields of tomorrow.”
Overwatch is available now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Blizzard is known for making games that not only sell well but also have the legs to last a long time. Do you think Overwatch will be just as popular a decade and a half from now like Diablo 2 and Warcraft III are today?
