At least you can count on Porsche to build the cool shit that it trots out (I can’t say that for certain other automakers). The German automaker has greenlit production for the awesome and retro 911 Speedster Concept that we saw back in June.
Apparently, fans and buyers alike made so much noise about the 911 Speedster Concept becoming a real thing that Porsche decided to just go ahead and build it. It will produce 1,948 examples, because that was the year that the first 356 “Number 1” was produced. I find this to be a slightly tacky production number, but it was meant to be Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebration, so whatever. Production will start in the first half of 2019.
The car on the stand at the Paris Motor Show is officially still a “concept study,” but Top Gear seems to think that it’s basically how the production version will look.

The color, according to Porsche’s own press release, is called Guards Red, which is a reference to the 1988 911 Speedster of the G-Model generation. It’s slightly different from the silver Speedster Concept we saw because it has new, cross-spoke, 21-inch wheels and a perforated black leather interior with red highlights. Additionally, the red concept has red-tinted daytime running lights and “Talbot”-shaped exterior mirrors in black chrome.
The Speedster uses a modded Carrera 4 body and the chassis and engine from the GT3, which means that it has a 4.0-liter flat-six that’ll sing up to 9,000 rpm and spit out 500 horsepower. It has a six-speed manual gearbox that was developed by Porsche’s GT department. It’s basically perfect.
Porsche didn’t announce how much it will charge for the 911 Speedster, but it will probably be extremely cheap. Kidding! It’ll rob more than a few children of their inheritances.

It also makes me laugh if anyone at the company didn’t think the cars would immediately sell if produced. Like, it’s Porsche. It could slap its name on a piece of moldy bread and the Porsche fans would go nuts for it.
