There are some truly scary-looking horror movies coming out this year, including James Wan’s The Conjuring 2. However, the upcoming Power Rangers reboot, of all movies, might prove to be the unlikeliest horror movie Hollywood has ever seen. I say this because, well, just look at Elizabeth Banks in costume as the new Rita Repulsa. Just look! Nightmare fodder.
Banks’ rendition of Repulsa couldn’t be further from the Rita we saw in the original series (who was played by Machiko Soga, and dubbed by Barbara Goodson). It’s like she was crossed with Poison Ivy and that opera singer from the Fifth Element; she has a strange serpentine vibe to her.
I don’t even know what’s going on. I’m sure there’s some sort of story behind the look, but it’s hard to stomach considering how different it is. Here’s what Banks told People, which shared the image you see above:
“It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa.” That’s the understatement of the year.
I don’t think anyone expected Banks to look identical to the Rita Repulsa fans grew up loving, but she looks like a completely different villain. There was something so comedic yet threatening about Repulsa’s previous look. Now she just looks like a character from Zoolander.
