Samsung Pay’s launch in the United Kingdom has been pushed back into 2017, Samsung has confirmed. The service was originally scheduled to make its debut in the U.K. this year, however, it is believed Samsung’s negotiations with British banks is holding it up.
“Following successful launches of Samsung Pay around the world, we are planning to launch the service in the UK in 2017,” the South Korean company told The Telegraph, without providing a reason for the delay or a more specific timeline for the service’s release.
Samsung will have surely been hoping that its mobile payment service would be available in time for the holidays when retail sales reach their peak. It would have been a great time to tackle rivals Apple Pay and Android Pay head-on, but there’s always next Christmas.
Of course, Samsung smartphone owners can already access Android Pay, which is available to download from the Google Play Store. However, Google’s service is not available on Samsung’s Gear smartwatches, which run Tizen rather than Android Wear.
Samsung Pay made its debut in the U.K. and South Korea last year, and has since expanded its reach to nine additional territories, including China, Spain, and Australia.
