Samsung planning high-end VR headset to challenge Oculus Rift, HTC Vive

The Gear VR is a fantastic introduction to virtual reality, but it can’t really compete with high-end headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Now, Samsung says it’s ready to kick things up a notch with its next VR product.

Speaking at the Samsung Developer Conference, R&D chief Injong Rhee confirmed plans for a new high-end VR headset, SamMobile reports. The new standalone product won’t require a smartphone to work, meaning it should include an internal display and built-in processor. It may also offer positional tracking, making it possible to move around inside virtual reality.

Rhee teased hand and gesture tracking as possible features, suggesting the new product won’t offer Room Scale positioning like the HTC Vive. However, he also said that it could be a few years before a Samsung headset with these capabilities hits the market.

Samsung still offers a perfectly capable experience with Gear VR, even if it’s mostly just a perk for Galaxy smartphone owners. The South Korean company may offer a more advanced headset in the future, but for now there’s always the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
