Scott Dixon will start on pole for Sunday’s 101st running of the Indianapolis 500, ahead of Ed Carpenter and 2016 race winner Alexander Rossi. Formula One superstar Fernando Alonso, who will skip the F1 Monaco Grand Prix to run the Verizon IndyCar Series’ biggest race, will start fifth in his rookie outing.
Dixon clocked in at 232.164 mph in qualifying, with Carpenter at 231.664 mph and Rossi at 231.487 mph. Two-time F1 champion and rookie IndyCar driver Alonso wasn’t far behind, logging 231.3 mph for fifth spot just over two weeks after he did his first IndyCar test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and hours after his engine went up in smoke.
Alonso, expected to score more points in Indy 500 qualifying than he has all year in F1 (that’s not hard to beat, since the number is zero), was on provisional pole for a short time before Rossi, and later, Dixon, took it. Alonso out-qualified Tony Kanaan and Will Power, both IndyCar champions, in his rookie outing.

The Fast Nine who ran for the pole on Sunday will start behind Dixon in the Indy 500 as follows: Carpenter, Rossi, Takuma Sato, Alonso, J.R. Hildebrand, Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Power.
Juan Pablo Montoya, only slated to race the Indy 500 this year and known by his one-race sponsor as “Mr. Jet Dryer,” will start 18th on Sunday. The full lineup and qualifying speeds can be found on IndyCar’s website.
