Sherlock left us with a pretty big cliffhanger at the end of season 3, and the show’s recent Christmas special didn’t totally clear up the mystery. Season 4 should bring some juicy answers, and this week we’re learning a little more about the upcoming episodes.
BBC announced this week that popular English actor Toby Jones will play a villain in the second episode of Sherlock season 4. You may remember Jones from the first two Captain America movies, where he played evil Hydra scientist Dr. Arnim Zola. He also voiced Dobby the elf in several Harry Potter films.
“Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle’s finest villains,” said Sherlock co-creator and writer Steven Moffat.
Jones will star in the second episode of Sherlock season four, suggesting he could be a one-off villain who won’t dominate the entire season. Moffat hasn’t revealed much about the new story but previously said that the season would focus on “ghosts of the past” in the lives of our two crime-solving heroes.
Sherlock season 4 episode 2 began filming this week. It’s being directed by Nick Hurran, who earned an Emmy nomination for his directing work in the season 3 finale, His Last Vow. Season four still doesn’t have an official release date, but it’s expected to arrive in time for the winter holidays.
