Square Enix chats 10 years of Final Fantasy XV development in new dev diary series

It’s no secret that Final Fantasy XV has been in development for far longer than fans and even executives had planned for. The overly ambitious “Fabula Nova Crystallis” initiative, covering the… complex mythology of Final Fantasy XIII, might have imploded upon itself, but could it have been worth it if Final Fantasy XV turns out to be “the ultimate Final Fantasy” as the latest dev blog from IGN implies?

In the first entry of a new dev diary chronicling the ten long years of development this game has gone through, director Hajime Tabata expands on his “Final Fantasy sickness” comments, knocking the plague out of his staff’s minds and busting up the ego that twisted the series to the breaking point.

Instead, the team took the series back to basics, focused heavily on established lore, creatures, character tropes, and settings, and really thought how to modernize these for the current generation. It’s not an overly difficult task to modernize something, but true skill comes from not mangling these elements beyond recognition, like Final Fantasy XIII did.
