Stay juiced: You can now rent battery packs before you get on Amtrak

Amtrak and a company named MobileQubes recently announced a partnership that will allow Amtrak riders to rent or buy “MobileQubes” battery packs before setting off on their trips. Amtrak usually has power outlets, but this allows you to make sure you’ve got a charge when you’re not in the train, making your way around another city, or waiting to check into your hotel. When you’re done, just return the Qube into one of the MobileQubes stations.

Pricing is set at $4.99 for 24 hours, with a rate of $0.99 per day after that initial fee. Or you can just buy a Qube right from a MobileQubes station for $44.99, though you could probably find something cheaper by walking into any number of Amtrak station shops. Each Qube has a 3,000mAh battery, enough to charge most phones once.

The MobileQube stations can be found in Boston South Station, Back Bay Station, Route 128 Station, Providence Station, New York Pennsylvania Station, Philadelphia 30th Street Station, Wilmington Station and Baltimore Penn Station. The Washington DC Union Station, another major hub on the Northeast Corridor, is a glaring omission from that list.
