Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining is getting the movie treatment

Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep, the sequel to his iconic 1977 novel The Shining, is reportedly getting made into a movie. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind, is writing the script, which will focus on an adult Danny Torrance.

Below is a portion of the book’s synopsis, which came out in 2013:

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival.

Stephen King will apparently serve as executive producer of the movie, which at this point has no release date; it’s not even official. However, with King-mania in full swing—11.22.63 is based on his novel, and a Dark Tower movie is in the works—it’s no surprise to hear more of his work is being adapted for the big screen.
