Following the disappointing debut of Batman v Superman, a lot is riding Suicide Squad to perform well. It has an incredible cast, a respected director, and an intriguing story that’s different from what we’ve seen in movies based on comic books. So Warner Bros. will probably be very happy to hear that the upcoming flick is popular—like, really popular.
According to comScore, Suicide Squad is currently the most popular movie set to come out later this year, even besting Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That’s a pretty big deal, especially considering just how immensely popular we know Star Wars to be. Granted, chatter around Suicide Squad could be higher simply because the movie’s release is on the horizon but it’s clearly tracking higher in online conversations (see chart below).
On the flip side of that, another Warner Bros. movie, The Legend of Tarzan, is tracking last in comScore’s “most talked about movies” list, while Sony’s Ghostbusters is also near the bottom. Of course, this data might not be indicative of box office performance but it certainly doesn’t bode well heading into their releases.
We got our first glimpse of Suicide Squad back in the summer of 2015 so it’s been a long period of waiting; I’m actually shocked interest has remained at such a high level. All of that pent up anticipation will come to a head when the film finally hits theaters in early August.
