Super Mario Run surpasses 25m downloads, bags new game mode

Super Mario Runhas surpassed 25 million downloads on iOS less than a week after making its official debut. The title has broken download records previously set by Pokémon GO, and Nintendo just made it even more appealing by adding a new game mode.

According to data from app analytics firm Sensor Tower, Nintendo’s first Super Mario game for mobile actually hit 25 million downloads in just four days. In comparison, it took Pokémon GO11 days to reach that milestone, while Clash Royale needed 12.

It is estimated that 2.1 million players have paid to unlock the full version of Super Mario Run, but Sensor Tower believes that figure would be a lot higher if the unlock wasn’t so expensive at $9.99.

“It can’t be understated, however, that the vast majority of early Super Mario Run downloaders clearly find the full game pricing prohibitive, and we can only image how much better the conversion rate could be at $2.99 or even $4.99,” reads the report.

Despite the impressive download rate, Nintendo investors appear to be disappointed with the game’s success and the negative reviews it is receiving on the App Store. The company’s share price has fallen 11 percent since last week’s launch.

“I don’t think this is a statement on the game’s quality… but rather the perceived value when compared to free-to-play games that offer much more content with optional microtransactions that enable players to experience it sooner,” said Sensor Tower analyst Spencer Gabriel.

But Nintendo is adding more content to make the $9.99 purchase more worthwhile. Super Mario Run’s latest update brings a new game mode called Friendly Run, which allows players to compete with friends without spending their in-game Rally Tickets.
