T-Mobile said Monday that it has reached a deal with Empresa De Telecomunicaciones De Cuba S.A . (ETECSA), a mobile phone company, that will soon allow T-Mobile customers to roam when traveling to Cuba. That’s big news now that the U.S. is allowing open travel to the country, but also because T-Mobile counts a large number of Cuban Americans among its customers.

“We have more customers of Cuban descent than any other wireless provider,” T-Mobile CEO John Legere said Monday in a release that noted about 36.6 percent of Cuban-born wireless users in the United States have tapped T-Mobile as their carrier. Those customers, once T-Mobile’s roaming deal is live, will be able to travel to and from Cuba placing phone calls, using data and sending text messages without additional fees, provided they’re on the proper plan.

T-Mobile said roaming to Cuba should start sometime later this summer.
