Tencent will buy Supercell, makers of Clash of Clans, for $8.6 billion

If you pay any attention to the Chinese business sector, you’ve heard of Tencent Holdings Limited. The company is seemingly everywhere, launching their own QQ platform for chat and multiplayer, as well as dipping their toes into all sorts of online services.

Tencent even has an appreciation for gaming investments. They scooped up the majority equity interest in Riot Games, makers of League of Legends, in 2011 for $230 million. They grabbed stake in Epic Games, Activision Blizzard and Robot Entertainment (makers of Orcs Must Die!). Now, they’ve announced a deal to acquire a majority stake in Supercell.

Supercell makes Clash of Clans, the massively popular mobile gaming series. Tencent has agreed to a deal to acquire 84.3 percent of Supercell for $8.6 billion.

That’s a whole lot of scratch.

Supercell makes big money. In the fiscal year ending in March 2016, Supercell reported revenues around €2.11 billion, or roughly $2.3 billion USD.
