In an effort to convince Model S and Model X owners autonomous driving is the future, Tesla is offering folks the chance to take autopilot for a spin—and it’ll be free for an entire month. In effect, the automaker is going to prove to owners that the functionality is a must-have feature—and worth the additional $3,000. Most expensive in-app purchase ever?
Model S and Model X cars sold by Tesla since 2014 include the necessary hardware for the feature, it’s just a matter of using the software to make autopilot work. At the point of sale, the separate software option costs $2,500, or $3,000 option if drivers want to add the feature later.
As part of the trail, not only do Tesla owners get access to autopilot functionality, but a feature known as Summon, which will open a garage, park the car, and then close the garage (or vice versa). Here’s the pop-up Tesla owners are getting:

Tesla hasn’t officially discussed the existence of these trials, but Electrek got hold of the message Tesla is sending to drivers. By the way, autopilot hardware will be standard with every Model 3 though purchasing the software to utilize it will likely be an additional cost.
