Between the grumbly V8 in the Mustang GT and the small but potent four-cylinder in the Mustang EcoBoost, it’s sometimes hard to remember the odd V6 middle child. A lot of people have even wondered if the V6 would be phased out eventually. Now, one forum user reports that may happen before the 2018 Mustangs roll out.
The tip comes via user XKRJAG on Mustang6G.com, who was scrolling through some options for the 2018 Mustang and noticed that the V6 and V6 convertible body styles were conspicuously absent. From their post on the matter:

The most significant change is the potential removal of the V6 model from the Mustang lineup, as the body type codes for the V6 come up as invalid in the dealer system.
Although the timing of this change may come as a surprise, it’s clear this has been years in the making with Ford having quietly laid the groundwork for the 2.3-liter EcoBoost to replace the 3.7-liter V6 model which has received noticeably few upgrades, options and packages in recent years.
We reached out to Ford for more information. A spokesperson wrote back that they don’t speculate about future products.
This move makes sense, as the EcoBoost Mustang replaced the V6 Mustang as the fuel-efficient option when it came out. As for the Mustang GT… well, you can’t have a Mustang without a V8 option.
