Because I’m feeling lucky that this jacket style, which dates back to 1800s France, is about to really have “a moment” in the spring of 2019.
Consider the chore jacket a stylish alternative to the military field jacket—just as durable and practical, but equipped with easy-access patch pockets for holding tools and supplies. Or, y’know, your phone and vape pen. Whatever. Both have endured as menswear staples for generations, as has the bomber (another military cut) but I think this is the year the chore jacket could take the top spot as “spring’s most perfect jacket.”
Perhaps best of all, taking this bet won’t require pitting your alma mater against Duke in the final four—financially speaking. Most of the chore jackets our team at SG loves right now hover in that sweet spot between $100 and $200—a more than worthy investment when you consider the cost-per-wear of such a classic piece of outerwear.

If you want to go full authentic Americana with your chore coat, Carhartt is the move. This jacket from their WIP (Work In Progress) sub-brand comes in nine shades of organic, unlined canvas including camo and white, but the black gets our vote for versatility and practicality. Add a couple pins to the collar to make it personal.
Everlane Chore Jacket, $88
The price point on Everlane’s chore coat is hard to beat. The navy, olive and khaki colors are all ridiculously easy to add into your late-winter and early-spring wardrobe—you may find yourself wearing the khaki one on repeat with a cream fisherman sweater, dark jeans and leather boots, for example.
Le Laboureur Moleskin Work Jacket, $125
The story goes that famed street style photographer Bill Cunningham picked up his iconic bleu de travail jacket at a hardware store in Paris because it looked practical. The rest is fashion history, but you can breathe new life into the look yourself with this authentic work jacket, made by a family-owned company in France.
Best Made Sashiko Chore Coat, $348
The most expensive chore coat on this list might also be our team’s favorite (oops!) thanks to its luxe texture and thoughtful detail. It’s made from fancy, indigo-dyed Japanese cotton and gets its distinctive look from a Japanese embroidery style called sashiko. A “running stitch” is then used to create patterns and designs including the eye-catching all-over dotting.
Bonobos Denim Chore Jacket, $128
If you’re over your basic denim trucker-style jacket, Bonobos is ready to swoop in with a fresh alternative. Their chore jacket is so light and soft you could almost wear it as a shirt on its own—though we still think it looks best layered over a t-shirt or button-down.
J.Crew Chore Jacket, $148
The color of J.Crew’s take on the chore jacket is reason enough to at least try it on. It’s done in a classic, durable canvas, which is great, but that distinctive “dark acorn” brown is the real star. It looks rich and cozy, like a beautiful leather chair you’d want to cozy up and read a book in all day.
Wood Wood Gavin Chore Coat, $185
And finally—the least conventional but most cheerful jacket of the bunch. Danish menswear label Wood Wood rendered their chore coat in a juicy shade of deep coral which is just too fun! I want to see a guy wearing this over a white button down with slim olive chinos—like a really, really well-dressed watermelon.
