The best moment in Captain America: Civil War almost didn’t happen

There were a lot of great moments in Captain America: Civil War, many of which came during that climactic airport. And while we loved the humor of Spider-Man and the brutality of Black Panther, it was actually Ant-Man who stole the show. Turns out, his big moment nearly didn’t happen.

Spoilers ahead.

In an interview with io9, the writers of Civil War, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, revealed the studio almost vetoed the inclusion of Giant-Man, which is a larger, stronger (and slower) version of Ant-Man.

“The [Russo brothers] had to fight for it,” McFeely said. “They had to go to the studio and say, ‘No it’s not silly, it’s cool.’”

And it was cool! Seeing Ant-Man go from tiny superhero to powerful giant was a great moment, and added an entirely new dynamic to the fight. It was unlike anything we’d seen in a Marvel movie, and when combined with the chaos of the scene and all the different characters duking it out, it helped cement the airport battle as the best in the MCU.

“It was just a great idea to turn the tide of the battle in a huge, shocking, unexpected way,” explained Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige to io9. “We have a lot of ideas for Ant-Man 2, none of which are contingent upon revealing Giant-Man, so we thought this would be the fun, unbelievable unexpected way to do that.”

Not only was it a fun way to turn the tide, but it leads to a great Star Wars reference, too. Hopefully, Marvel won’t be so shy about utilizing Ant-Man’s unique abilities the next time he shows up. Which, by the way, will be in Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018.
