More than any other season, summer is a time for doing: cookouts, rooftop bars, weddings, and more—there’s never a shortage of Things To Do. All that running around in the heat naturally lends itself to wanting good-looking footwear that will keep you cool and comfortable all season long. And while bright sneakers have their place within your summer wardrobe, sometimes you just need to reach for something a bit nicer. But not, y’know, too much nicer.
Enter the espadrille. Nestled somewhere in between a dress shoe and a sneaker, espadrilles are typically made from a lighter material (think canvas or linen) with a slim dress shoe silhouette. Meaning? They’re not as boxy as a boat shoe yet more formal than sandals, capable of transitioning from the office to a date with the greatest of ease! Oh, and they look just as good with a pair of chinos or jeans as they do with shorts. Get you a shoe who can do both, amirite?

While espadrilles shine brightest during the summer, they’re actually great for early fall and late spring, too. Which is nice, since once you try on a pair, they might be the only thing you want to wear. See SG HQ’s picks for whatever things summer brings your way.
Ask a Clean Person and Style Girlfriend are teaming up this month to bring you the latest on what to wear for spring and summer … and how to care for your new wardrobe acquisitions. This week: exposed feet.
Casmag Espadrilles, $22
This pair of espadrilles from Casmag is excellently priced if you’re still not 100% sure about the trend. Or, hell, if you’re just not looking to spend too much on a shoe you’ll inevitably wear so much that you’ll need to get rid of it at the end of the season.
Toms Espadrille, $50
Yes, those Toms—but hear me out! Remember the Toms craze of the late 2000s when everyone had a pair? Yeah, those were espadrilles.

Now, remember how comfortable they were? Imagine that same feeling on a weekend coffee run, or your first step onto the beach Memorial Day weekend. Pretty perfect, right? The other great thing about Toms is that they come in almost every color imaginable (though these blue ones practically scream summer).
Rivieras Tour Du Monde Espadrilles, $78
A blend of cotton and mesh, this pair from French brand Rivieras is both breathable (for those really warm days) and comfortable to boot. The navy with red trim lends a stylish, preppy look if you feel like channeling Vampire Weekend.
Suitsupply Taupe Espadrilles, $99
Don’t sleep on Suitsupply’s footwear selection, which features trendier—and higher quality—selections than what you might see from other chain suit stores. Case in point? These espadrilles in a luxe-looking nubuck suede. You’d be hard pressed to find anything quite so stylish at a Men’s Wearhouse, let alone in that material and for that price. It’s a high-end look, without having to spend high-end money.
Mulo Linen Espadrilles, $190
British brand Mulo crafted these oh-so-chic espadrilles with linen, making for the same lightweight breathability that makes it a go-to fabric for summer suiting. The rich, sky blue color of the shoes would pop with a pair of darker-wash jeans and a white T-shirt, or a short-sleeve button up and chambray shorts.
Tod’s Collapsible-Heel Suede Espadrilles, $495
Don’t you wish you could wear your favorite pair of house slippers out? Well, with these Tod’s espadrilles, you might as well be. The premium Italian suede upper is super comfortable and is also designed to have its heel collapsed, turning them into the most stylish slip-ons ever. That’s basically two shoes for the price of one (almost justifies the nearly $500 price tag, right?). Plus, the rich, textured grey will provide an elegant backdrop to any outfit, meaning you’ll reach for them time and time again.
