The Coolest Car At The Monterey Motorsports Reunion Is This Custom Van With an F1 Car

Truly, one can never be as cool as whoever shows up to the vintage races at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion to run Laguna Seca in a 1970s F1 car with a custom Dodge Street Van.

The Monterey Motorsports Reunion is filled with the most exquisite vintage racing cars the mind can conjure, but I didn’t expect to find one of the most exquisite custom vans in history, too. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The caliber of cars here is unreal.

This Dodge bears Street Van stickers, which was an actual model Dodge sold in the mid-70s into the ‘80s. The stickered ones were pre-1979, if Wikipedia is to be believed. But yeah, these were factory-made vans trying to cash in on the custom van craze.

Not that a lot of this van is factory. The shag carpet floor, the wood wheel, and the side pipes are all custom. Same with the poster and boombox inside.

No custom van is complete without a mural. This one is Vandalf. Hell yes. Full wizard. Good way to go.

The F1 car, as the racer next to it explained to me, had been black flagged in today’s racing so its owner wasn’t around to give more details.

But it’s not hard to see that South African F1 driver’s champion-to-be Jody Scheckter drove it, so that pegs it to 1974-1976, and since it has four wheels not six, it’s not a P34. That narrows it down to a Tyrrell 006 or 007, and the exposed Cosworth DFV shows it to be the latter.
