What looks like an ordinary romance quickly reveals itself to be something more sinister. Of course, the backing track of Roy Orbison’s haunting “Only the Lonely” only adds to The Discovery’s mystery, which explores the life of a couple played by Jason Segel and Rooney Mara.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:
One year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified, millions around the world have ended their own lives in order to “get there.” A man and woman fall in love while coming to terms with their own tragic pasts and the true nature of the afterlife.
As the saying goes, “Life sucks and then you die.” When people realize they can bypass their crappy lives and go directly to the afterlife, what’s to stop them? Well, love, which is apparently what the characters played by Segel and Mara find. But can their love keep them from being tempted by the escape of death?
Netflix + science fiction = awesome
The Discovery’s heavy premise is matched by a beautiful edit, painting the film in a cooler, dream-like tone. It’s always difficult to judge a movie based on a single trailer but I’m very intrigued. This looks like one of those movies that will have audiences thinking long after it’s over.
The good news is The Discovery will hit Netflix on March 31 after making its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, so you’ll be able to check it out very soon. Until then, peep the trailer above and tell me you’re not excited to see more.
