The tables have turned in the first trailer for Universal’s The Fate of the Furious. Dom (Vin Diesel) is a bad guy, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) is a good guy, and a submarine is used as a pursuit vehicle. Yep, this is a Fast and Furious movie alright.
The only real issue I see with this film is that it’s not called The F8 of the Furious; seems like a missed opportunity considering this is the eighth film in the franchise.
There are explosions, fast cars and plenty of over-the-top action. Every time a new entry in the franchise comes out, I wonder how they’re going to top the last. We’ve seen Dwayne Johnson rip off a full-arm cast. We’ve seen Vin Diesel jump across a freeway gap to save Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). And we’ve seen cars parachute from a plane.
Now, director F. Gary Gray is taking audiences to new heights by pulling off the biggest stunt yet: Making Dom a bad guy. Or, that’s what the trailer would have us believe. For a character who talks so much about family, he sure has no issue betraying them.
“I don’t have friends, I got family”
That’s a real quote Dominic Toretto said in Furious 7. So, why is he suddenly helping Charlize Theron’s Cipher? Has he been brainwashed? Is she blackmailing him? Do her braids have some kind of mythical powers? And is this her origin story before Mad Max: Fury Road?
Not so fun fact: This is only the second film in the franchise not to star Paul Walker, who tragically died in a car accident in 2013.
The Fate of the Furious hits theaters on April 14, 2017.
