The Grand Tour May Be The Most Illegally Downloaded TV Show In History

In a short time, The Grand Tour has set a record or two. Its $3.2 million opening is likely the most expensive television scene ever, and it had the most watched Amazon Prime premiere. But it also might have set a less flattering record: the most illegally watched show ever, beating Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and Westworld.

According to the Independent, the piracy data analysts at Muso recently released a new report that suggests the ex-Top Gear trio’s new show is the most illegally downloaded in history. The show is available to subscribers of Amazon Prime, which costs $99 per year or $10.99 per month. Subscription to Amazon’s Prime Video service only is $8.99 per month.

Apparently, there are a lot of folks out there who skipped out on the fee. As for how its stats on illegal downloading compare to the other major shows listed above, the Independent reports that Muso chief commercial officer Chris Elkins said The Grand Tour is“off the scale in terms of volume.”

That volume consists of 7.9 million illegal downloads for the first episode, 6.4 million for the second and 4.6 million for the third, according to the Guardian. The largest volume of illegal downloads comes from hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond’s fellow Brits, with British viewers making up 13.7 percent of the audience watching illegally.

For how that translates into revenue, check out this stat: according to Muso’s report, Amazon Prime lost more than $4 million in revenue at current exchange rates in Britain alone for the premiere episode. Read that one again—on one of the episodes, among 13.7 percent of the illegally downloading audience, Muso’s report suggests that Amazon Prime lost more than $4 million.

That’s a lot of lost revenue, and a big (probable) record. If you contributed to the record, congratulations! You probably just made history. Maybe keep this one off your resume, though.
