The Latest Car To Get Recalled Over Unintended Acceleration Is, Uh, The Barbie Dream Camper

It’s every child’s dream-turned-nightmare: Their little ride-on car has come to life, leaving the driver nothing but a mere spectator as they’re launched into a hellride. And now, this Christine-meets-Toyota horrorshow is real: Dream Campers are still running haywire even after the pedal is released, causing a recall of 44,000 plastic vans.

Parents with this specific Barbie Dream Camper in their homes have been instructed to “immediately take the recalled Power Wheels away from children, stop using them and contact Fisher-Price for a free repair,” according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

It further reports on the specifics of the model in question:

This recall involves children’s Power Wheels Barbie Dream Campers with model number FRC29 with a grey foot pedal. The recalled ride-on vehicles are hot pink with blue accents and have the Barbie logo printed on the back. They are battery-operated and have a play kitchen, a fold out grill and pretend campfire. The model number is printed on a label under the hood.

The devil wears many disguises.

These Power Wheels Barbie Dream Campers were sold specifically at Walmart from July 2018 through January 2019—aka, prime shopping season for summer birthdays and winter holidays. The 44,000 vehicles are being recalled due to risk of injury, not to mention the mental trauma that’s gotta result from a car deciding you’re its bitch at such a young age.

Thankfully, the problem seems to be a relatively easy fix if the CPSC is asking for their recall and subsequent repair, not just a flat-out recall altogether. If you have one of the demon campers, you can follow Mattel’s recall instructions here.

No injuries have been reported, but the CPSC has received seventeen reports of Barbie Campers rum amok, so be on the lookout for any runaway Barbie vans terrorizing your neighborhood.
