There’s something pretty damn intoxicating about a vintage-looking car loaded with high-powered modern technology. Mercedes-Benz saw that appeal, so they took inspiration from their record-setting 1937 W 125, loaded it up with an electric powertrain, and pulled off the covers to drop some jaws at Pebble Beach.
The original W 125 pulled inspiration from the planes of the era, to which its smooth curves and solid-looking body attest. Rudolf Caracciola took the car out on the A5 autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt where they set a mindblowing record of 268.9 mph—a record that stood for eighty years, until 2017.
That’s pretty impressive for a car back in the day, and why mess with a good thing? Mercedes-Benz knew they had a car with potential in the W 125, since it was setting nearly impossible-to-break records. Why not update it with a modern electric powertrain to set some standards for classy, environmentally friendly safe vehicles?
The drivetrain of the Silver Arrow concept is powered by a thin, rechargeable battery to keep with the sleek feel of the whole car. It has a capacity of 80 kWh for a range of 250 miles, which isn’t half bad when you consider the gas mileage of a lot of cars today. And with an output of 738 hp, that’s not a bad deal. I’d drive the hell outta this bad boy.

And it just looks so goddamn good. It’s a single-seater, so you don’t have to worry about anyone else getting in the way of your sick ride. Painted in Alubeam Silver, you can just imagine this slicing through the air like dripping, molten metal. There’s enough brushed aluminum, brown leather, and wooden pinstriping to make you feel like you’re in a high-tech spaceship straight from the past. And, just so you know, it also has extendible rear spoilers, because this thing is gonna run so fast you’re gonna need air brakes to slow you the hell down.
Unfortunately, it is just a concept car, which means you’re probably not gonna see a production version any time soon. You’re just gonna have to close your eyes and imagine what it’s gonna feel like to drive something this classy.
