An Amtrak train derailed Sunday morning after it struck a backhoe on the tracks near Philadelphia, killing at least two people and injuring dozens more, according to news reports.
The New York Times reports Amtrak Train 89, traveling from New York to Georgia, hit the piece of equipment and derailed around 8 a.m. The two people who died were in or on the backhoe, and 30 train passengers were also transported to area hospitals as well for non-life threatening injuries, the newspaper reported.

A passenger, Adriene Hobdy, said the crash led to a “chaotic” scene as passengers tried to ascertain what had happened.
“The direct impact was big,” Ms. Hobdy, 33, said in a telephone interview. “It was terrible, absolutely terrible.
“All you felt was boom, boom, boom boom. Our windows flew out. People were trying to get on the floor, trying to walk.”
Amtrak said 341 passengers and seven crew members were aboard. It’s not immediately clear why the backhoe was on the tracks.
