Verizon announced this week that it’s going to slash $200 off the total cost of the Google Pixel this Friday and Saturday. Yes, you still need to sign a contract with the carrier, but this is a great deal on a stellar phone. Verizon is discounting every model, including the Pixel and Pixel XL in 32GB and 128GB capacities.
Verizon is requiring that you use its device payment plans in order to take advantage of the deal, however, which means you’ll need to agree to pay off the cost of the device, less the $200, over the next two years. That translates into roughly $10 per month for the 32GB Pixel and $15 per month for the 32GB Pixel XL.
Expect those prices to increase if you want the 128GB storage model. The 128GB Pixel XL version has been out of stock for a while, however, so don’t expect it to be easy to come by on Friday.
A great deal on a Pixel if you’re willing to sign a contract
The Pixel XL is my favorite Android smartphone right now, so you really can’t go wrong with this deal so long as you’re fine with paying off the cost of a device over two years. The design isn’t as compelling as I’d hoped for, but it offers an amazing camera and access to Android 7.1 with Google Assistant, something no other phone on the market can give you. The software experience is stellar, too, thanks to the latest Snapdragon 821 processor under the hood; everything just seems to fly.
If you’re buying one, I highly recommend you grab the Google Daydream View VR headset as well. It’s worth the extra $79 and allows you to use your phone to power a full 360-degree virtual reality experience. Use it to play games, watch movies, tour museums, walk around foreign cities in Google Street View and more.
I’ve started to prefer the pay full-cost, upfront model, so I’m not entirely crazy about Verizon’s requirement to sign up for a payment plan. That’s how the cookie crumbles, though, and Verizon would probably have flocks of customers running in its doors if it knocked $200 off a full-price model, no contract. I’ll save that dream for another day.
