Isaiah Thomas did not seem thrilled about being traded from the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers in August, according to a new video from The Players’ Tribune.
The video, part of a series about Thomas’ return to the court following a hip injury, captured the moment Thomas learned he was traded, with Thomas recalling the incident.
The main takeaway is the surprise players feel when they learn they have to change cities and teams.
“What are you talking about?” Thomas said at the time after receiving a phone call from Celtics president Danny Ainge, who made the trade. “My kids are about to start school … After everything I went through. You’re not supposed to do that.”
Thomas said he wasn’t upset about the trade, saying, “I’m not tripping, but it’s just crazy that they would do that.”
Thomas had an All-Star year for the Celtics in 2016-17, averaging 29 points per game and leading the Celtics to the Eastern Conference Playoffs before he was shut down with his hip injury. Thomas played through the postseason despite the death of his sister in April.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated in October, Thomas said he might not talk to Ainge again.
“I might not ever talk to Danny again. That might not happen,” Thomas said. “I’ll talk to everybody else. But what he did, knowing everything I went through, you don’t do that, bro. That’s not right. I’m not saying eff you. But every team in this situation comes out a year or two later and says, ‘We made a mistake.’ That’s what they’ll say, too.”
Thomas has yet to suit up for the Cavs, but is reportedly targeting a January return to the floor.
“I was cool in Boston,” Thomas said in the video. “I knew my way around.”
