This week’s Top Gear got the lowest ratings in the show’s history. C’mon. It wasn’t that bad, was it?
Chris Harris was back with an Aston Martin too loud for its home country and Rory Reid drove all of our favorite New York backroads in a Tesla. It was the Top Gear we all wanted. Right?
At least, that’s what I was telling myself as I slogged through a completely undramatic train race segment devoid of any real drama. The closest thing there was to action was Eddie Jordan playing spoons. Ratings reflected that, dropping to half of what the season debuted at, a record low.

Once more, Top Gear’s Chris Evans/Matt LeBlanc crew was limp and uninspiring. They were doing everything TG is supposed to do, like buy unreliable old Jaguars and race against trains. But nobody seemed like they actually cared about beating the train, and the Jag never even approached breaking down.
The show ended up being a bunch of boring old people having a pleasant drive on camera.

Harris’ Vulcan piece was wonderfully lucid, and it was wonderful to see Reid not only give some praise to electric cars (though it’s hard to trust Top Gear, which changes its opinion on what the Car of the Future should be every few seasons) but also shine a light on some absolutely great roads not far from NYC.
What did you think of the episode? It deserved better, right?
