Porsche trademarked the ‘960′ name back in September, and we’re just now finding out about it. The new trademark could mean the automaker is working on a new car. Or not. But if it is, what could the ‘Porsche 960′ be?
CarMagazine recently caught on to the new trademarked ‘960′ name, and went on to wildly speculate that Porsche was now planning a mid-engine sportscar on “new underpinnings” sourced from somewhere in the VW Group family. They go on to cite “sources” claiming weight targets, no all-wheel steering, and a late parting gift from former Porsche chairman Ferdinand Piech in the form of a new flat-eight engine.

When recently queried about the registration, Porsche initially rolled out the response you might expect: ‘We won’t comment on future product. We’re just looking to preserve the nameplate identity and combinations that we don’t have, and to avoid going through the labour of proving a later claim based on our traditions.’
However, the spokesperson added the following: ‘There’s not been much on the topic of new models but, if you look, there are blank spots in our range – and you have to look at what the competition is doing and keep these things in mind.’
CarMagazine believes that blank spot is somewhere between the top-tier 911 Turbo (capital-T) and the 918 supercar, which makes enough sense with rivals like the Ferrari 488 and McLaren’s 650S.
If there’s even actually a car, it probably wont get too much public attention until after the next generation Porsche 911 in 2018. We’ll see!
