“I don’t know of a car that better combines speed and comfort,” Top Gear host Chris Harris says behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe. “And I’ve driven every car that’s supposed to do it.” Here’s why he thinks this relatively obscure luxury car is worth such high praise.
Personal luxury barges are a bit of a lost art in 2019. Immense coupes designed to propel one or two rich people over long distances have sort of faded into obscurity, as people who might have driven them in the past move to full-sized luxury sedans or straight up supercars which are now more comfortable whenever.
But Harris, over 11 minuted of gushing and exploring the amazing minutiae of Mercedes’ six-figure S63, really makes a pretty strong case for what makes this car great. “The cumulative effect of that silence and that ride comfort, is that, you normally get out after a three-hour journey fresher than you started.”
He makes a joke about how hard it is to communicate a quiet ride in a car video, but actually, the tone of his narration really does sound more relaxed and reserved than usual.
And Harris isn’t even driving the latest version of the car–he mentions the 577 horsepower 5.5-liter twin turbo V8, which has since been replaced by a 4.0-liter rated to a claimed 603 HP and 664 lb-ft in today’s S63.

Oh yeah, and for $241,450, for at least a little longer, you can even step up to an S65 with 621 HP and 738 lb-ft from a 6.0-liter V12.
But a car like this isn’t about letters and numbers, even if those numbers are very high no matter which version you find yourself in. An S-Class coupe is about Swarovski crystal headlights, redundant power seat adjusters, supreme luxury, and the ability to wreck an expensive set of tires doing donuts on a whim.
